Charming old cottage with unique garden in the centre of the only medieval town on the French Mediterrean coast
THE LOCATION
Antibes is ideally situated between Nice and Cannes on the Mediterranean coast. The nearest Airport is at Nice (14 miles) and regular bus services run directly from the Airport to Antibes centre. Antibes is also a main line railway station with good TGV services to major European cities.
THE HOUSE
Is situated in a pedestrian side street just off one of the main squares of the Old Town. The façade of the house belies what lies behind. We lived in Antibes for 3 years, a five-minute walk away and never realised the existence of such gardens!
You enter into a large living room dominated by a stone fireplace flanked by bookshelves. The intricately beam and plaster ceiling is in the original building style of the area and the floor is tiled in the traditional hexagonal "tomettes" of Provence. French windows lead directly onto a long terrace under a pergola shaded by wisteria, jasmine and bougainvillea. It is always cool there in summer.
Through an open archway is the dining area with its own French window onto the terrace and adjoining it the fitted kitchen. This is not large but designed to incorporate gas hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and single sink. The kitchen can be divided from the dining area by a set of sliding doors.
Bedroom 1: Double bedroom with king-size bed, beamed ceiling and wooden floor. There is a walk-in wardrobe and the en-suite bathroom is fully tiled and equipped with bath, shower and toilet.
Bedroom 2: Small double bedroom with double bed and tiled floor. Shower cubicle and Victorian hand basin en-suite: own toilet next door.
THE GARDEN
Planted by a botanist more than 200 years ago, the garden is an oasis of calm only seconds from the lively bustle of the Old Town. Before the Revolution, it was part of the King’s Gardens and the Palm Tree is one of the tallest and oldest in the South of France. Mature cypress, laurels and persimmon provide shade whilst roses, vine and ivy smother the walls. There is a well in the garden (and has been since Roman times) and a stone fountain on the terrace. The spout is a Celtic water god circa 800BC – 400BC.
The entrance to the terrace is guarded by two old stone lions, Lennox and Rufus (or Lenny and Red as they are more usually known.)
In the evening, you can relax with a cool glass of local rosé in the floodlit garden. Outdoor furniture is provided for both the terrace and garden.
nearby sandy beaches with EU blue flags, lots of restaurants, cafés, Provençal market every morning. Easy bus/train connections along the Riviera coast and inland.
