The village of Mariol lies in the foothills of of the Montagne Bourbonnaise and the northern edge of the Livradois-Forez Park, the largest nature park in Europe. The region has exceptional natural landscapes and is rich in flora and fauna. To the west lies the Limagne, where the Allier and Dore rivers converge, which is a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. There are lots of lovely walks in the area, from the gentle to the more demanding. Some can be taken from the house itself The Montagne Bourbonnaise rises to 1300m and is a favourite for walkers, cyclists and horseriders. Two Grande Randonnee trails, the GR3 and the GR3A, pass nearby. The Rivers Sioule and Allier (very local) offer canoing. There is a range of lakes in the area to swim in. The Puy de Dôme and the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park is an hour's drive away where there is spectacular walking and climbing, as well as skiing and snow-boarding in winter. You can also visit Vulcania, the volcano exhibition centre and museum. Vichy, an elegant spa town with a plan d'eau is 15 minutes drive away. Concerts, plays and operas are regularly performed in the beautiful opera house in Vichy. There is a 6 screen cinema and there are some nice restaurants. The town regularly hosts national and international sporting events. The whole area is famous for its Romanesque churches and its medieval castles. The chateau at nearby Busset has exhibitions and concerts. There are also many beautiful towns with medieval centres to visit such as Moulins, Billom, Thiers, and Clermont-Ferrand.
